Ontario Spec Plus Gen II SP49 Knife (Black) Review

Ontario's Spec Plus line of knives is quite possibly the best stuff they're putting out right now. I feel that they are superior to the RAT series, which hasn't been the same since RAT actually left Ontario and became ESEE. The only other line that is as good is the Ranger seris, and they tend to be more expensive (micarta handles and all).

What's to like about the SP49? A lot. Ontario offers other 8" knives in the Spec Plus line, including the SP45 and the SP43, as well as the 49's twin, known as the SP48. The difference is this - the 48 and 49 both have deeper bellies for better chopping results, while retaining the decently sharp points. The SP49 features a sabre grind as opposed to the full flat grind of the 48. What does this mean? The 49 weighs a couple/few ounces more than the 48, but that's all. The kraton handle is tough, but very forgiving on the hand when chopping or baton work comes into play.

As a slicer, the 49's edge is plenty sufficient - being a chopper doesn't hinder it. It may well be the best 8" knife that Ontario offers. The SP43 with it's spear point may argue, but it isn't quite the chopper than the 49 is.

The sheath is a bit of a disappointment, but I normally won't take off points for that. In this case, I really should but I won't simply because the knife is darn good.

That said, this "one size fits all" thing can become tiresome when you purchase the 49's little brother (the SP47), and find that the sheath is pretty much the same length. Another issue with the 49's sheath? Well, it has a Velcro strap. Now some folks will like that over a button snap, and I can understand. However, THIS particular sheath features a strap that doesn't have enough Velcro on it, and what Velcro IS there isn't nearly aggressive enough. Get it dirty one good time, and I think you'll be losing the Velcro ability...which is bad because there is literally NOTHING else securing that knife.

Ontario, you need to do better with this! Either do the Velcro right, or substitute a button snap strap! Why does the SP50 have a sheath with two button snap straps and the SP49 gets one weak Velcro strap?!

Ok, enough ranting. I'd buy the SP49 again in a heartbeat. And I'd rid myself of the current sheath as soon as I could get another worth bothering with.
