Shimano SC-6502 Flight Deck Computer Head Review

This computer is great if you have Shimano Flight Deck compatible brake/shift levers. You won't be able to take advantage of the features if you do not have Flight Deck compatible levers though.

Been using this computer for several group rides and it seems like a pretty good one that meets most rider's needs. Takes a little bit of set up time, but it has worked flawlessly for me. The computer head did not come with any instructions, but I beleive they package the instructions with the harness (sold separately). Make sure you buy the correct harness so that it fits with your model of Shimano levers. The SC-6502 has your basic features including speed, distance traveled, odometer, cadence, timer, max speed, avg speed, etc. One note, the cadence feature is an estimated cadence based on your gear selection and speed, not the actual cadence you are pedaling.

The best feature about this computer is that it allows you to see which gears you have selected. Also with Flight Deck compatible levers, the buttons to change the mode on the computer are integrated into side of the brake levers. Although this is nice option so that you don't have to move your hands much to change modes, I've noticed that I've pressed the buttons accidently quite often on my first ride. Once I adjusted my thumb positioning on subsequent rides, this was not a big issue.

One other thing that might be a plus is that the wireless wheel sensor appears to transmit upwards from the front fork in a cone shape pattern. This seems to help prevent getting interference from other riders who may have the same computer. I have another computer (inexpensive Bell model) that will get interference from other riders if they have the same model. So far it hasn't happened with the Shimano computer, but probably not a lot of other riders have this computer either.

Pros:
- Lets you see which gear you have selected
- Integrated buttons into flight deck compatible levers
- Estimated cadence
- Easy to use once you figure it out

Cons:
- Mode buttons on side of brake levers can be pressed accidently so it takes some getting used to.
- Small text so it may be hard to see which mode you're in, but once you remember the order this may not be a big deal
- Takes a little longer to set up since you have to put in the chain ring information
