The unit is well-built and provides sturdy enough support for a 3-4 lb. weight. The holder can be mounted sideways against the gunnel just like Scotty's popular rod holders, so it is very convenient. However, if you have an aluminum boat and mount directly to the side, the motor vibrations can transfer directly down the cable and create a strange buzzing noise. I had no problems with the braking. In fact, you can tighten the nut just enough to hold the weight while still keeping it loose enough to crank up or down. The biggest drawback on this unit is the large drag angle resulting from the small weight. At 2.5 mph I had a hard time getting the ball to ride below 12-16 feet (as seen on my depth finder). The water friction and lure friction just want to push the weight up and you can easily see the cable angle expand as you lower the weight or pull a heavier lure. Sometimes the weight would drag too far behind the boat and would disappear from the fish finder. Light, lipless lures performed the best, but you need to keep them close to the line release. I think the best application for this product is on a canoe, kayak, row boat, or trolling motor-powered boat where you go slow and have no choice but to go light. My advice is if your boat can handle it and you have the money, go larger and you can't go wrong. If you fish relatively shallow lakes or need to save money, this unit has the best functionality at the lowest pricepoint.
