Most new parents we know end up with some sort of metal and fabric folding portable crib/playpen. Most parents we know also wonder why there isn't a lighter and more versatile alternative. Our designers (and parents) took that challenge in coming up with the Tiny Tent. CPSIA approved for babies 6 months and up, the Tiny Tent is the perfect sanctuary for baby wherever you may be: in-laws, hotel, park, friend's house, etc. A 1" self-inflating foam pad slides into a separate compartment on the bottom of the tent and protects and cushions baby from whatever lies beneath. A zippered door with cover and 3 windows provide shade or visibility (also perfect for a baby monitor) depending on the situation. As baby gets bigger the pad can be used separately for myriad uses and the tent turns into a perfect castle, fort, space shuttle or personal tent while camping inside a big tent. Lightspeed Tiny Tent, Green Review
This review has been a long time coming since I've had my Tiny Tents for over a year now and have been very satisfied with them. I bought them to replace my Kidco Peapods when the recall pulled them off the market and my kids had outgrown them. I use these Tiny Tents indoors for "camp outs" in the living room or spare bedroom so we can have sleepovers all year through. We also use them as travel beds for the children: they find them familiar and there is no fuss at bedtime about strange beds. (You can also use them to contain toys quickly before leaving your hotel room.) These tents are sized for children (or dogs, if you see the manufacturer's website) and are appropriate for children who can use big kid beds if you plan to use them for overnight use (not toddlers or babies, unless appropriately supervised). My children were about 3.5 years old when I first started using them. They are definitely larger and taller than the Peapod Plus line and are closer in build to real tents than to children's travel beds.
Features that made me select this manufacturer/model:
1. It's an instant tent!! The instructions on Amazon's product page shows stills of the simple way you set up this tent. The basic setup instructions are: Take the folded tent out of its case and wrappings. Flop it on the ground so the legs splay out. Grab the bottom of the center hub (on top of the tent) and pull it upwards towards the intersection of poles (so your two hands come together). One tent I have needs a little muscle to do this, but not the other. The tent pops up. Attach the hub and intersection with the little hook. Inflate the pad (auto-inflate valve or blow in if you're impatient). Stick the pad into the bottom zippered compartment and zipper it back up. (You must use the pad or else the structure will not be held stiffly across the bottom.)
2. Breakdown is also simple and done very quickly (just reverse the above instructions). Hint: Secure all the windows and zippers before rolling the loose material up. Also, you can deflate the pad faster if you open the valve and roll it up while squashing it with your body.
3. Tiny Tents have an excellent quality of build and material. This product is not marketed as a "play tent" because it is far more durable than almost any playtent I have used. You can tell the manufacturer makes actual camping tents. The material, quality of connections, and pieces are closer to an adult's camping tent than to a play tent or sun shelter (I have a few of these too). I have taken them up and down maybe a dozen times and have not had any piece weaken. The tent material does not feel like it will puncture easily or fray at the seams. The pole structure seems as sturdy as when I first received it. The zippered panels and mesh sections are put together well and do not seem destined for stress.
4. The size will accommodate my children for quite a few more years. It is longer and taller, which makes it easier for taller children to use (sitting up is not a problem anywhere inside). Since the interior space is regular and not pod-shaped (Peapod Plus's are examples of pods), you are not as restricted in using the interior and so these work better as play tents for children 3 years and up. A standard pillow is easily used in this tent size (it fits perfectly in one end, if you need to visualize the size).
Some things to think about (or, why I don't use them for absolutely everything):
1. They pack up in a nice "rectangle" of tent with the pad making a separate roll of material to be packed together in the provided duffle bag. From experience, I can say that two Tiny Tents and two pads can be stuck into the same duffle. This packed duffle then can fit into the largest possible suitcase you can bring on an airplane without paying oversized fees (restricted by length, based on flying on 9/13). You do have to be careful about weight if bringing two Tiny Tents in your luggage though. Therefore, Tiny Tents for airplane travel might not suit everyone. If you are concerned about weight or are traveling with younger kids you might consider the Kidco Peapod - Cranberry or the Kidco Peapod Plus - Twilight. Two Peapod Pluses take up more room than two Tiny Tents but weigh less. The packed Peapod Pluses also are slightly smaller in length than the packed Tiny Tents for smaller suitcases.
2. The footprint of the Tiny Tents are significant if you have small hotel rooms or very limited space. We have to fit two tents so we always survey pictures of the hotel rooms before bringing them to see if we can rearrange the furniture to fit. The height is also a factor for setup indoors. You cannot see over the tents very easily when sitting or lying in bed. These are not discrete tents that you can leave up in your host's living room and blocking the tv, if you're trying to be considerate.
So, do I recommend these tents? YES! These are cool tents. I fully expect they will last a long time and will accommodate a lot of use (and abuse) from the children. I think they would be perfectly suitable for use outside, even though I have not used them there. Uhh.. truthfully, I hate camping. HATE it.
The only thing I really feel I have to say is that it's a lot cheaper to get these from the manufacturer's website than from here.
