I've used three different kinds of fins in three capacities: lifeguarding, bodysurfing, and free diving, but the main reason I have a pair of fins is for bodysurfing, and that's where UDTs excel.

Don't get me wrong, they're great for lifeguarding though there are more compact fins that would be fine for water rescues since you don't need the quick acceleration these fins provide when getting to your victim or puling them in. For that, you need a compact fin you can strap on quickly that will provide sustained extra speed over the course of what may be a long swim. The voit duck feet are great for that and churchills would be fine as well.

For free diving, these fins are perfectly fine, though if you talk to the equipment snobs they'll tell you you need a pair of three hundred dollar free diving fins. Don't listen to them. If you're advanced enough to benefit from super nice equipment, you probably already know what fins work well.

For bodysurfing, these are amazing performers. They provide excellent thrust in a very short amount of time provided of course that you've got enough muscle to move them. If you don't, there's only one way to develop that muscle, but it's worth it. If you pull yourself into the wave with your arms more than by kicking, you probably don't need UDTs. If that's the case I'd consider something simple like, again, regular duck feet or churchills.

Regarding what the reviewer above wrote, you don't need any kind of foot protection to wear these. Just toughen up. Yeah, the first time you go out you might get a few blisters, but keep at it and those blisters will be replaced by tougher skin, and you can avoid another purchase and enjoy one of the most simple, equipment-light sports on the planet.
