11" About World War I Historical Reproduction Kukri:
This is the reproduction of old World War I era Kukri by GK&CO. Kukri House one of best blacksmith ( traditionally called Kaami meaning Kukri maker. This Kukri is very famous among Military Knife collectors because of the fact that the very design of this Kukri was carried/used by the Gurkhas in hand-to-hand battle in the Jungle of Burma during 1st World War. This Kukri knife played a very significant role in creating the history of the Gurkhas. This Kukri was also great to use for any kind of heavy works. It can be used to chop wood, fire wood, bone, cleaning bushes. The blade is made of Highly Graded Carbon Steel and has semi-polished finished. It is broad and more curved then Standard Kukris therefore it is perfect while use. The Handle is flat full tang. Unlike other handle (Not Rat tail), the handle and Blade is a one single piece and visible all around the handle (See pictures). Two Rosewood pieces joint (Attached) strongly to the metal part of handle with three metal rivets and adjust lanyard hole on handle. Special Brown Sheath with some dark spots is made of Buffalo hide. The blade measures 12" long while the handle is 5.5" therefore; the overall length of the Kukri is 17.5 inches. The widest part of the blade is 2.28" and the spine is 0.47" (12mm) at the thickest part. The weight of the kukri is 1100 grams. First off, this is one beast of a knife. The heft is impressive to say the least, the chopping portion of the blade came sufficiently sharp, and the overall appearance is, in a word, intimidating. That being said, this knife is not a work of art by any stretch of the imagination and certainly does not represent any notion of old world craftsmanship. The grind on the knife, particularly at the tip is not even remotely even. The tang's width meanders, widens, and narrows with apparent random glee (though thick enough at all points that there is no danger of it breaking), the wooden handle does not fit flush with the tang and actually separates a bit towards the sharp ends. The fuller on one side is not completely cut, and there is a small block of metal missing from a portion of the spine. Cosmetically , this knife looks like it was pounded out with a hammer in a yurt in some far off corner of the world. Oh Wait, it was! Which is why I gave it four stars. Just the fact that it is what it is, and doesn't apologize for that fact, has a coolness factor that another mass produced knife just can't replicate. It would have been nice if the guy that banged this Kukri out of some spring steel that was left lying around was a little more detail oriented, but whatever, it is not like it won't work... and I was able to put a reasonably awesome edge on this thing after about an hour with my spyderco triangle sharpener. It can shave as well as any of my other knives. In fact, I merely rested the main cutting edge on a regular folded bath towel with no force applied and it literally cut through two layers ... and that was just resting it there (I certainly had no intention of ruining my son's favorite mickey mouse towel... and I am certainly not looking forward to explaining that one to my wife... Maybe I will blame it on our non-existent dog). That being said, the blade was not equally prepared in all places to take an edge. A portion of the blade, before the main curve and after the little semi-circular cut out seemed like it was barely ground. I'm no expert on Kukris, but I thought this portion was supposed to be especially sharp for carving, then again maybe not. I wanted it sharp anyway, so back to my trusty Spyderco..It was incredibly difficult to get anything resembling an edge there, In truth I'm only half way done with that portion. At a certain point it just wasn't worth the effort. I'll get it sharp eventually, but it is good enough for now. The little knife that came with the kukri, (I don't remember what it is called) was all but useless. I also spent a good deal of time sharpening it and it is still not sharp enough to cut paper cleanly. However, I carry a ridiculously sharp pocket knife most of the time so, I'm done. Overall, I'm happy with the package.. warts and all.
