Living in the desert, where we feed hay on decomposed granite (sand-like) ground, horses are prone to sand colic. We have used a psyllium supplement seven days a month for the nine years we've had horses. So far no bad colic (knocking on wood). The problem is getting the horses to eat the psyllium. Pelleted products are the only way for us to go with our feeding regimen, and we've tried every psyllium pellet on the market. Three of our horses and the donkey will eat any of them, but two horses were very picky, eating their food pellets but leaving all the psyllium pellets mixed with them behind. We had to use various methods such as mixing with applesauce, hand feeding a few a time etc. to get any down. What a pain. When we saw these licorice-flavored pellets online about a year ago they looked worth a try.For the first two months all the horses ate all of their pellets. After that, one of the picky horses started leaving about half of the psyllium behind. However, If I hold up the bowl and ask him to eat more, he gets enough down that I feel satisfied. He just seems to think one and a half scoops is his limit. The other picky one is still eating them with no problem a year later.
Psyllium only works if the horse will eat it, and this is the best product we've found for that. It is also less expensive than the other products when purchased in quantity (we prefer the 50lb bag) so it saves not only product waste, but initial expense. We're very pleased with Equus Psyllium Pellets and wish we'd found this product long before we did. I've yet to see it sold anywhere but online.
